Grass Tournament 2018

Navajo Club at the Annual Grass Tournament proudly wearing their Coach Darina Memorial Shirts.

Registration is Closed

We have closed registration for the 2018 season. We have 135 registered girls and 13 teams: three 12s; six 14s; two 16s; and, two 18s. Team rosters are in the process of being posted.

The current practice schedule is located in the schedule section of the website.

In honor of Coach Darina, the club has elected to wear pink jerseys this season instead of the traditional green and gold. Memorial t-shirts will be received soon and available for a $20 donation. The funds raised will go to Chad and his three children, two of whom are playing with us this season.

Week of 2/26 & Closing Registration

First off, I hope the 7th & 8th group enjoyed the time that Starlings CEO Tod Mattox shared with us in the gym today.

Next, the beginning of the season is almost upon use. The coaches will have two more times to see you before registration is closed and the teams are formed.

For this week:

Tuesday: All high school girls will work out at the Salvation Army/Joan Kroc center from 7:30-8:45pm. Because of the short time window, please be ready to go at 7:30pm.

Thursday:

6th graders and below will workout at Salvation Army/Joan Kroc Center from 7:30-8:45.

7th & 8th graders will workout at Helix from 7-9pm.

The Joan Kroc Center is on University Ave. just to the west of Helix HS.

Saturday: The coaches will be attending a coaching clinic.

Sunday: workout times are:

10-11am: 6th graders and below

11-noon: 7th & 8th graders

Noon-1pm: All high school girls

All completed registration packets must be turned in prior to the time I leave the gym on Sunday. Full or partial payment of $300 must also be made unless I or Dennis have agreed to some other payment arrangements. The coaches will be meeting Sunday afternoon to form the teams, and the only girls placed on a team will be those that have completed the registration process (paperwork with uniform sizes and payment).

Coaches will notify their teams either Sunday night or Monday, with each team practicing twice the following week. Some teams may even be practicing Monday night. Helix is a year round school and will be going on break soon. Once they, we will have 6:00-7:30 time slots for the 12s practices.

As thing currently stand, it is looking like three 12s teams, two 7th grade teams, three 8th grade teams, and three, maybe four high school teams.

Starlings motto, in case you have not heard it: “Giving all girls a chance to soar”.

Open Workout Februay 25 & Registration

We are having another open workout this Sunday, February 25, at Helix HS. The age groupings are:

10:00-11:30  6th graders and below

11:30-1:00 7th & 8th graders

1:00-2:30 High Schoolers

If we have another open workout on 3/4 workout, it will be our last of the season.

Registration packets and payments can be turned in at the workout. For packets, they can be placed in the folder on the table. Make sure the player has tried on the jersey and shorts, and noted sizes for the jersey, shorts, t-shirt and socks (socks are not mentioned on some of the packets, and come in Small, Medium, Large & extra-large). If  paying by check (make checks payable to Starlings), just staple the check to the packet. If paying by  cash put it in an envelope with the amount and players name on the outside, and give it to Dennis, Marv or me. If a packet has been turned in and you are just turning in a check, provide the check to one of us and make sure the players name is on the memo line if the last name of the player is not printed on the check.

We will be in the gym nights during the week of 2/26 and will be closing registration either 3/1 or 3/4. The weekend of March 4th the teams will be formed and uniforms will be ordered. The completed packet, and payment must be in for a player to be placed on a team. That is the full $525 or an initial payment of $300 unless some other arrangement has been made with Dennis or me. Team practices will start the first full week in March. It currently looks like we will have 10 teams, and have the capacity to go to 13, so if you know of girls that might be interested, don’t be afraid to let them know about us.

Payments and packets can also be mailed to: Ken Rutan, 7288 Margerum Ave., San Diego, CA 92120.

Lastly, there is a coaching clinic at San Diego City College on Saturday March 3 from 9-11am. All San Diego Starlings coaches will participate. If you have some background in volleyball, teaching and/or coaching, and might be interested in helping as an assistant coach, you are welcome to attend. Additionally, I need 10-12 8th graders to attend to participate in the clinic (in workout gear to run drills). I spoke at a recent workout with 8th graders that have previously played with us. Most if not all seemed interested. From the group of 8th graders that have played with us in the past, I need confirmation as to who is willing to attend. You can take your player, or they can ride with me and or other coaches that will be attending. We can meet at my house at 8:30 am. For those interested, please let me know. If too many girls respond, it will be first come first serve. I want to confirm at the 2/25 workout the group that will go to the clinic. Girls will need to wear a Starlings t-shirt or jersey. Bottom-line, the person that is running the clinic wanted to have a 14s group to work with at the clinic and I agreed to provide the girls.

Quote of the week: “ a good player can perform well, a really good player makes those around her play better”. And the afterthought, guess which type of player any coach wants on their team.

See  you in the gym.

Sunday Workout & Registration

For Sunday February 18 our workouts are as follows:

10:00 – 11:30 7th & 8th graders

11:30 – 1:00 6th grade and below

1:00 – 2:30 high schoolers

Registration packets can be turned in at the table. Make checks payable to Starlings and staple to the packet. If you are paying in cash, provide it to Dennis, Marv or Ken in an envelope with the players name on it.

Based upon some of the packets turned in, there are 3 points I want  to make:

  1. Have the player try on the sample jersey and shorts before turning in the packet. If it has already been turned in a packet but not tried on the samples, do so at a workout. I can change sizes until we close registration after which I will immediately place our uniform order. I will also have the turned in packets at the workouts if you want to double check what was ordered. GIRLS WILL GET WHAT THEY ORDER and if you order the wrong size that is on you. As to sweatshirts, I suggest looking around the gym and asking to try on sweatshirts brought into the gym from a returning player, and asking returning players of the similar size what size their starlings t-shirt is. Samples will be at the workouts.
  2. While the divisions are spilt by age, we form our teams based upon grade. For club volleyball September 1 is the controlling birth date. For example, if a girl turns 13 on August 31, she is a 13 and  must play 14s. However, if the girl turns 13 on September 1 or later, while she is a 12 she will play 14s if she is in the 7th grade.
  3. The only team requests that will be honored are for sisters in the same grade.

Quote of the week: Outcome is often outside of ones control, EFFORT never is.

See you in the gym.

Sixth Sunday Workout & Informational/Registration Meeting

Our sixth open workout of the season is going to be on Sunday, February 11, 2018. The site will be Helix HS gym located on 7323 University Ave in La Mesa. Use the parking lot on the south side of the campus. The gym is right next to the parking lot. Arrive at least 10 minutes prior to your allocated time. There is no fee for the workout and no paperwork is required.

Our times for this week have changed for each age group (going to make the high schoolers get up early for a change):

10:00 to 11:30 – All high school girls

11:30 to 1:00 – 7th & 8th graders

1:00-2:30 – All high school girls

We hope to have Sunday workouts throughout February. No need to let me know if your player can or can’t make it.

One of the goals of every workout is for every girl to leave the gym a better player than when she walked in. Others are working up a sweat and having fun.

Quote of the week: The two things Coach Ken hates to hear in the gym: a player saying “I Can’t”; and, a coach saying “Hustle”.

The time to get all your questions answered has come. Our informational/registration meeting is set for Tuesday, February 13 at 6:30 at the Palisades Presbyterian Church 6301 Birchwood St, San Diego, CA 92120 https://www.bing.com/maps/directions?rtp=adr.~pos.32.7874412536621_-117.083633422852_6301+Birchwood+St%2c+San+Diego%2c+CA+92120_Palisades+Presbyterian+Church_(619)+582-0852 (press control & click for directions).

Players should attend to be fitted for jerseys and shorts. If returning players could wear their Starlings sweatshirt so that others can try them on to select a size, that would be helpful. If you need a registration packet, email ken@starlings.org for one. Print, fill it out and turn it in. DO NOT insert sizes for jerseys and shorts until samples have been tried on, and packets will not be accepted until sizes are noted in the packet, and girls will get what they submit on the form. For those that can pay the full amount, turn it in with the packet. For those that are on the fence and/or want to wait to pay, please turn in the packet. Payment will need to be made before the registration closes the first week of March at which time the teams will be formed. For those that need to make payments, $300 is due by the close of registration, with the remainder due on or before May 1. For those in need of a different payment plan, talk with Dennis or Ken with your proposal. While funds are needed to cover our expenses, we don’t want payment to be a barrier to participating.

New this year, in addition to turning in a registration packet, each player will need to be registered with Sports Engine. Go to www.user.sportngin.com . There are various reasons for this, one of which is to use our website for disseminating information. When inserting the email address to register, insert a parent/guardian’s address instead of the players unless you want notices to go directly to the players email.

As to our tournament schedule this season, it is: March 24,  April 14,  April 29, May 6, May 20 (grass), June 3 (SD County), and June 22-24 (Nationals). The grass tournament had been set for May 19 for SD City College, but was moved to May 20 at UCSD.

If you want to be taken off the contact list for the coming season, please let me know. However, when responding to be taken off the list please provide the players name.
